After January 1,2002, all persons wishing to hunt with a bow must take the CE/FS bowhuntingcourse or its equivalent.Trapping CoursesTo meet the license requirements to trap, applicants must successfully pass abasic trapping course. Anyone wishing to enroll in the CoyoteLand Trapping Course, must have completed the basic trapping course or anequivalent course from another state or province. Anyone wishing to land trapfor coyotes must also take the Coyote Land Trapping Course. As of 1982, a junior license is required for minors under sixteen years of age. Courses fill up quickly and youmay have to wait or travel a longer distance to attend a course if none are available inyour town. Coyote Land Trapping course is 4 hours or longer. Currently available courses are listed below. Persons who pass this course and purchase a trapping license areauthorized during a specific season to land trap coyotes on private property ofat least 10 contiguous acres in size. The Pittman-Robertson Program is funded by the excise tax paid by sportsmen on rifles, shotgun, ammunition, handguns and archery equipment. The basic trapping course is approximately six hours longand consists of both classroom study and field work. The Commissioner of the Department of EnvironmentalProtection is required by law (CGS. The Coyote Land TrappingCourse teaches specific practical techniques that must be used for land trappingcoyotes. The remaining 25% state match is derived by using the value of the services provided by the volunteer instructors. They must demonstratetheir ability to handle firearms in actual field conditions such as live firing at arange, fence crossing and removal of firearms from vehicles. This is a separatecourse from the basic trapping course. Where courses are taught varies from town to town and includes suchlocations as sportsmen's clubs, community centers, schools and offices of the Departmentof Environmental Protection.
