Three common bow-shooting myths - hunting with bow and arrow ...
A few gifted, diligent bowhunters can extend their game-getting range to 50 or 60 yards. An especially heavy, full-length shaft (say 600 grains) will certainly penetrate more deeply in game than an unusually lightweight overdraw shaft (say 400 grains). Animal flesh does not clamp about a shaft like target foam, and possesses natural oils and fluids which prevent penetrating friction. At most, the heavy shaft will possess five or six percent more penetrating power. Bowhunting abounds with myths -- fallacies based on old wives' tails and advertising misinformation. By knowing the facts about these subjects, you can effectively sell customers what they really need. Every archer should keep shots at game within his own personal "sure kill" limitations. For this reason, there is no ethical objection to shooting at 50-yard or 60-yard deer, provided these animals are calm, and provided you are certain you can hit the mark. Here are three especially common bits of bow-shooting baloney. However, studies indicate that closer animals are more intimately threatened by danger and thus likely to jump, duck or wheel at the sound of your bowstring. However, the difference between the two is often exaggerated. If your field points, blunts, and broadheads all weigh 125 grains, for example, your setup will theoretically produce identical point of impact. In long-range shooting situations, where flat trajectory can give you an edge, a light shaft is usually best. In reality, ethical shooting distance must be an individual choice -- not a rigid, mandated matter. In short-range, dense-woods circumstances, a medium to heavy shaft might be a more accurate choice. In truth, a giant 2512 aluminum shaft and a tiny carbon shaft will penetrate the same in game animals, provide they weigh the same. Large-diameter shafts will perform every bit as well. Modern archers often notice that small carbon or aluminum arrows penetrate more deeply in foam targets than larger-diameter shafts. Most intermediate and advanced bowhunters can hit an eight-inch target out to 40 yards. On a big creature, like an elk, the difference in penetration won't be more than two or three inches -- hardly enough to worry about. On average, a very light shaft and a very heavy shaft from the same bow are quite close in penetrating energy. On deer-size game, both arrows will normally slice completely through the chest, canceling any theoretical difference. Penetration depth is seldom the prime concern unless your quarry is a moose, brown bear or other animal over 1,000 pounds.document.write(''); A second penetration myth concerns arrow shaft diameter. Some bowhunters are religiously opposed to shots beyond 30, 35 or 40 yards. The invariable result is erratic point of impact and the reinforced notion that consistent accuracy if impossible. The key is using heads that weigh exactly the same. The key to success is knowing how to tune your bow. The truth is, a perfectly adjusted bow shoots all types of arrowheads in the same place. They will appreciate the favor, and be more prone to shop at your store! To be a truly effective salesperson, you must learn to dispel such bogus ideas. Unfortunately, many bowhunters and even archery store owners do not. Unfortunately, many bowhunters and even archery store owners to not.

For Bowhunting With Arrows Good Strategies - Bow Hunting Supplies
Good Strategies for Bowhunting with Arrows
I acquired a 45-pound laminated recurve two summers later and killed my first deer with it by that fall. I shot that bow until my fingers blistered. I still can't shake the notion, no matter how modern my equipment becomes, that there's magic involved, directing that arrow into a wee little spot way out yonder. If you can't comfortably point your bow directly at the target and pull it straight back smoothly, you're shooting too much draw weight. I'll not bore you with a droll repetition of shooting form and tuning details that have been covered at great length already. It provides authoritative coverage of world-class whitetails, the latest approaches to deer management and advanced hunting techniques. It's always fascinated me that we hit anything at all. Maurice Thompson, one of the very first to write about archery, called it the Witchery Of Archery. Shooting form factors heavily, assuring that your arrow is set into motion in the same manner each and every shot. Shortly afterwards neighborhood rabbits remained in a constant state of terror; nearby creek carp gaining newfound wariness. Since then I've bowhunted with any kind of archery gear conceivable, from the most primitive to tricked-out, high-tech compounds, in locations as wide flung as Alaska and Africa. Still, I feel inclined to share a few tidbits.Trained pro-shop employees assure that you purchase a bow with correct draw length most importantly, but also one with reasonable draw weight. The flight of the arrow still haunts me. The marvels of modern technology make this no less wondrous, watching slow-motion footage of a released arrow, seeing all those wildly oscillating bow parts, arrows coming off the string like wet noodles. There's magic in the flight of the arrow, but you can be the wizard who controls its outcome. There's plenty of information out there, plus qualified archery pro-shop professionals are eager to help. This applies no matter your equipment preferences. This starts with choosing gear that fits your particular stature, makes it comfortable and natural to shoot well. Tuning follows, matching arrows to draw weight and length, aligning every component so that it works together smoothly to launch arrows true. When 10, I mowed maybe 37 lawns to buy a Fred Bear fiberglass recurve with 30-pound draw, a boxed kit including cedar arrows, arm guard, glove and hip quiver. You should be able to remain at full draw for no less than 10 seconds without becoming shaky, no matter your bow type.

Getting your bow and arrows and other gear in shape for hunting season
Besides giving it a general once-over, I take care of the items in this checklist: - Check string for wear, replace if necessary, and wax it. Here are some tips and guidelines for making sure your bow and related equipment is in top condition. I don't know about you, but I've had enough equipment failure to last me a lifetime, so I like to check and re-check my stuff before I head to the woods in pursuit of a buck. I like to apply matte camo tape over any surface that might glare. I shoot a compound bow, so this article is geared towards compounds rather than "traditional" archery gear.I usually start with my bow, since that's where the big problems can occur. Is the hooded area for your broadheads in good shape? Make sure it's tight and won't vibrate and hum when you shoot. My rubber-band "cat-whiskers" have just about had it, so I'll be replacing mine this year. Repair or replace a bent or nicked guide rod and/or worn slide. Replace if necessary; a limb breaking at full draw can ruin anyone's day, and may cause injury. After taking care of the items in the above list, I move on to my arrows and other gear.
