Bowhunting - Smoke N Feathers - Where bullet and shafts lead us
A large doe came in with a nice 9pt behind her. A string loop is also a must with the angle at full draw. About that time the feeder went off and deer scattered, I told Ash to get her bow up and get ready. After harvesting deer with this head and easton axis arrows all I do is wash them off good and sharpen on a flat diamond stone and then strope them on leather. After high fives and laughter we took the deer back to camp to show everyone and for Ash to clean. Archery is very personal and what one person likes another will hate. Ash got her bow up and the doe put her head down and Ash was able to draw. At the shot I watched the arrow disappear throught the does side and hit the ground 20 yds the other side of the deer. Crackers who has a shop and makes custom strings and tuning was able to get 346fps out of one at 61lbs with a 306gr arrow!! For one the bow has lost almost half a pound and is more portable, though I have always liked the hoyts for being very stable without a stabilizer due to the extra weight of the tech riser. Getting the heads to shave again only takes a few minutes. Go shoot one at your dealer and see for yourself. Hunting TodayMetaRegisterLog inArchive for the 'Bowhunting' Category Cari’s buck Cari took this 10pt this past weekend on our trip to the hill country. I also shot this bow with a 400gr arrow at 70 pounds and still got 312fps, talk about drive through some flesh. I am going to get me in a 60lb and shoot it in 3d this year, will have to shoot a heavy arrow to get down to 280fps. I can see several smaller bucks and the large 9 in the distance when the doe eased back in. I figured with the short ata and 7″ brace height that it will not be forgiving. I have had really good bloodtrails and nothing has went over 60yds. I have in the past and will continue to try all the new heads that come out on the market, but I have found the hellrazor to be one that I can use from now on. I have one that I practice with all the time and is shot into foam, sand, mud, etc and has held to all of it.The heads come in 85,100,and 125gr versions. I have pounded this head through hog shoulders at close range and not even chipped a blade. I love the feel of their grip, not too fat or too thin, or any cold medal to have to hold on to. I personally like the longer xl due to it being smoother drawing and more forgiving, but you cant really go wrong with either one. I really like this bow and have found the one I am going to shoot this year. I shot a 635gr arrow out of the katerra and got 235fps, talk about shoot through something!! I shot it with the usual 29″ 70lb 350gr arrow and got a speedy 327 fps out of it. I tested the bow with the usual 29″ draw 70lbs with a 350 gr. I then backed the bow down to 62lbs with the same 350gr arrow and was still getting 306. IBO rated at 330fps I was able to get 319 out of it at 29″ 70lb with the usual 350gr arrow. If you are looking for a bow to hunt out of tight spots with, believe this is the one to have. If you are looking for a tough dependable head where you dont have to fool with replacement blades look no further than the hellrazor. If your in the market for a new bow give them a try, also when looking for a new bow make sure you shoot every model you can get your hand on and not what somebody is telling you is the best. If your local dealer will not let you shoot the bows first find one that will. In light of this though the DXT is a great little bow. In the Diamond line we will have the Marquee which is a 34″ single cam with roller gaurd and a 324 IBO. It has both the new roller guard and string suppressor. It is no less forgiving than the drenalin, only difference is I had to move the peep higher and further out than usual due to the short length. It wasn’t 10 min and I can see deer starting to move in. Lessons learned as well as a lifetime of bowhunting memories are shared in his unique and wonderful voice.I truly enjoyed this book as well as still reading Jim’s monthly articles in Petersens Bowhunting mag. Most short bows will not shoot as fast as their longer counterparts, but this did not factor in here. On the hoyt they actually make the bow louder and we have been taking them off. Other than that they are smooth, fast, and forgiving bows. Posted on 2nd October 2007 Under: Bowhunting | No Comments »New BowTech’s We finally know what will be new in the Bowtech line this year.First we have the General, this is pretty much a 31 1/4″ guardian with a 8 1/4″ brace height and a 314 ibo rating. Posted on 31st December 2007 Under: Bowhunting | No Comments »Ash takes a doe with new bow It was a cold predawn morning with the moon up and the sun starting to rise as me and Ash walked to the blind. Posted on 3rd December 2007 Under: Bowhunting | 1 Comment »Hoyt Katerra’s If you are looking for a smooth, fast 33″ hunting bow the Katerra can fit the bill for you. She had bucks running does all over her and finally got this one to stand still long enough for a 16yd shot. She held for a few seconds and made a perfect broadside double lung hit on the deer. She is skinning her own deer now as well as mine. She only made it 45 yds before going down for the count. She was shooting a pearon sidewinder set at 41lbs shooting 24″ beman ics jr arrows with 4bld 85 gr magnus stingers. Shooting some of my 375gr axis hunting arrows through the dxt still turned up a very respectable 293fps, well above the drenalin I am currently shooting. Stop by your dealer and try one, I think you will like it. The 101st is a 36.25 ATA bow with a 7″ brace height. The ata is 33″‘, the brace height is 6″, the cam is the new z3 cam 1/2 in place of the vector cam. The bow has the slim grip that feels great in the hand and is standard on all the bowtechs. The bucks stood around and we watched several more come and go before we got out and recovered her deer. The deer expired 70 yds later after taking a 100gr NAP Hellrazor through the lungs from a Hoyt vetrix shooting Easton axis arrows. The draw is smooth with just a slight hump where it breaks over to a solid wall that you will not creep out of. The dxt has less hand shock than the drenalin both with and without a stabilizer and is the quietest bow that I have in the shop. The dxt shot a 10 shot average of 307 over my chrono, faster than the 33″ drenalin. The new cam is really smooth and has picked up the speed some as well. The ones on the bowtech are not as loud but look like an afterthought and are in your line of sight. The only thing I do not like about the new hoyts and this years bowtechs as well are the string suppressors. The prices at the proshops are also in line with the box stores if not cheaper, I know I am cheaper than gander mtn or cabelas on most anything. These are all 4 blade heads and do massive damage with great penatration. These are extremely tough heads made with german steel blades that come extremely sharp. These heads have always shot to my field points out of many different bows. They have all been pass throughs and have held up to hitting the dirt and rocks on the other side. This bow is going to be a big hit with both speed and forgiveness. This bow is just as smooth as the drenalin and also easy to shoot. This bow is not as quiet as the guardian but is not loud either. This bow is pretty much a remake of last years vulcan with some updates. This bow is quieter and faster than the bowtech general and you dont have the gaudy string suppressor staring you in the face. This includes stories from California to Africa and every where in between. Try as many as possible and make your own decisions. We checked the pit blind for varmints and then climbed on in. We have used one head on 6 deer now with no chipped blades, bends or any kind of failure. We were hunting does for Ash as Cari had dibbs on the last buck we were allowed on the property. Weighing in at 100gr and having a cutting diameter of 1 1/8″ the 3 blade head is as tough as they get. Weight 4.25lbs, draw weights in 40,50,60, and 70lbs with a draw length from 25-30. What I like about this bow and its 36″ brother the Katerra xl which has a 7″ brace height is the ability to throw a heavy arrow fast. When shooting the katerra with a 425gr arrow I was still able to get over 300fps with it. With a 29.75 axle to axle, and a weight of 3.75lbs the bow is very hunter friendly. With a 30″ draw it will easily shoot the ibo rating and have heard of some shooting the longer draw up close to 340fps. With the 85 having a 1″ cut and the other 2 a 1 1/4″ cuts. With the same arrow out of the xl I was in the upper 280’s(the xl is rated slower than the shorter bow. You will also come out better going to a proshop over the box stores by getting better service and one on one help.

All you need to do is loosen a simple lockdown screw to remove and reset the blades. And no wonder-this year's event in Atlanta, Georgia, hosted close to 90 new exhibitors, as well as hundreds of already established manufacturers from the world of archery. And the combination of an increased limb angle, wrapped split-limb design and binary cams makes this crossbow both quiet and energy efficient. Designed by Sims Vibrations Laboratory, the simple device is currently available in the Beman ICS Hunter line of arrows; plans are afoot to also offer the ViBrake for standard diameter carbon arrows. It features a solid, machined aluminum riser and a parallel limb design that shoots 310 fps. Measuring 30 1/2 inches axle to axle, the easy-to-shoot Cheetah offers draw lengths of 25 to 30 inches and sports a seven-inch brace height. Offered in 100 grains, the Blitz features three stainless-steel vented blades with a cutting diameter of 1 1/8 inches, as well as a stainless-steel chisel-style tip. Once again, Outdoor Canada was on hand to survey the offerings-and select the cream of the crop.GUARDIAN - BEST NEW TECHNOLOGYMore energy and speed with less vibration and noise make BowTech's Guardian a serious high-performance bow. Safety features include a bolt sensor that automatically resets the safety if a bolt isn't present, thus preventing a dry fire. Starting at around $389, this is an awesome compound bow package for the money. The centre pivot design and split limbs allow the bow to be drawn beyond parallel for a greater transfer of energy; the centre-tracking binary cams further help to eliminate limb torque and cam lean, while the centre pivot gets rid of vibration where it meets the limbs. There's an incredible amount of power, too: the bow can deliver 155 foot-pounds of kinetic energy when shooting a 425-grain bolt at the 175-pound draw weight. This doubly serves to help stabilize the arrow in flight for increased accuracy. This serves to enhance the arrow's stability, hence accuracy. With the pivot, the bow has an unconventionally long, stable deflexed riser that offers balance for the shooter. With the ViBrake, more energy is delivered through the point of the arrow and not lost through the sides in the form of noise and vibration.

In The SCA Archery
Archery in the SCA
A particularly usefulaspect of an arm guard is that it will help to keep loose clothing out of the wayof the bow string as it is released. Abruptly, the marshal calls "it's clear down range - beginshooting". Again, check with a localarchery marshal for more information. All other styles of bowsincluding recurves, longbows, selfbows, crossbows, and various composite bows reflectingthe style and types of equipment used during the Middle Ages are fine. Although in modern times, therole of the bow has been virtually replaced by the use of gunpowder, it still remainsthe favorite weapon of many sportsmen. Although this is notnecessarily a problem for those that shoot a recurve bow, anyone who shoots alongbow will find an arm guard to be an absolute necessity. And thehitting the gold at the center of the target...or splitting the wand [a narrow polestuck in the ground] is definitely a satisfying accomplishment. One of the unique aspects of archery in the SCA is that it is, for the most part, anon-competitive sport. Archery in the SCAIntroductionYou stand poised at the line, the target...a wand at a distance of 35 yards. Archery is probably one of the first activitiesthat you are likely to participate in when you join the SCA. Archery practicesare currently being held on Sunday afternoons at the Foxworthy Hills camp site in Lyons Brookdepending on weather conditions and the availability of marshals. Archerymarshals will inspect equipment to make sure that it is safe to use, and coordinatethe running of the lines to ensure the safety of all those present, including participantsand spectators alike. Archerypractices are held on a fairly regular basis during the summer months, beginning in lateMay and usually drawing to a close somewhere around the end of October. Arm guards will cost in the range of $10-15but can be easily made from a small piece of leather and a bit of lacing. As the storygoes, the Saxon King of England, known as Edward the Confessor, died without an heir inthe spring of 1066. Bear in mind that the efficiency of a given bow can be a significantfactor when choosing a particular draw weight. Besidesa bow and some arrows, you should also have a shooting glove, an arm guard, and aquiver. But in this case, it is a real tourney ata local SCA event here in Pictou County. Confidently, you draw your bow and take aim, muscles stretching, and inan instant, the arrow streaks toward the target...A scene from a Robin Hood movie? Early militaryrecords concerning the use of the bow have been recorded from countries throughoutEurope, the Middle East and the Far East and has figured prominently in the successof numerous military campaigns throughout history. First, a properly selected arrow can be shot accuratelyout of just about any bow; an improperly selected arrow will not shoot right out ofany bow, regardless of price. For the type of shooting that is donein the SCA, most archers should consider a bow ranging in draw weight between 30 and40 lbs depending on their draw length and upper body strength. Heraldicbanners flutter in the light breeze...it is a beautiful sunny day in the middle ofAugust. However, throughhis connections with Edward the Confessor, William the Duke of Normandy expected toassume the crown of England. In fact, many archers make their own arrows! In fact, the bow, in its most primitive form, has been used to hunt big game throughout the world, including the African elephant.References to the use of the bow as an important military weapon come from most ofthe early civilizations in Europe and Asia. In order to shoot well, your arrows need to be carefully matched to a)the bow that you are using, and b) your shooting style and form. In the context of the time period coveredby the SCA (500 - 1600 A.D.), the bow first gives rise to prominence as an effective militaryweapon in the 11th century during the Norman invasion of England in 1066. In this regard, most SCA groups have loaner gear on hand for those that wantto try some shooting before heading for the archery shop. In this regard, recurve bows tend to be more forgiving andeasier to shoot than other types of bows such as the longbow or the various types of selfbows or flat bows. In this regard, theaverage draw weight of bows used in the SCA is generally in the 30-35 lb range, forboth men and woman! In this regard, twothings need to be considered. It is also one sportthat just about anyone can do well in and compete on an equal footing. It is also the onemartial activity that just about everyone can take part in - adults and children ofall ages, regardless of your physical condition or handicap. Lastly, a word of advice...don't get a bowthat is too difficult for you to draw and hold! Like most recreationalactivities however, there is some basic equipment that you are going to need. Many archers find thatother types of bows, particularly the longbow, are more difficult to shoot accuratelyand take longer to learn to shoot well. Matched arrows can bepurchased from any number of commercial sources or they can be custom made by fletcherswithin the SCA. Much of the shooting is focused on a personal 'best' and almostall competitions are purely for fun...what we are essentially doing is reenacting anactivity that was an integral and essential aspect of day-to-day life in the MiddleAges. On October 14, 1066, the Norman army consisting primarily of archers andmounted troops met King Harold and his army of foot-soldiers who were armed with battleaxes at Hastings in southern England. Quivers will cost in the range of $25-80+depending on the style and materials used. Recurve bows are generally easier to draw (they stack less), andbecause they have a fairly deep shelf, are closer to being center-shot and lesssubject to what is referred to as the 'archer's paradox'. Scores are based on a shoot using the NAA-FITA standard 5 colour, 60centimeter round targets and consisting of one end of 6 arrows shot at measureddistances of 20, 30, and 40 yards, and a 30 second speed round at 20 yards. Some people find it difficult to easily removearrows from a back quiver while they are shooting and prefer a side quiver instead. The main disadvantage of a side quiver is that it tends to swing and get in the waya bit when you are walking or moving around. The back quiver keeps the arrows well out of the wayand provides a moderate speed advantage when removing arrows from the quiver, particularly during a speed round. The battle that insued was soon over when King Harold diedas a result of being hit in the eye by an arrow. The bow stands uniquely by itselfas an effective and highly efficient hunting weapon and has been used continuouslythroughout the ages by most cultures, both primitive and modern. The English army was initially successful in holdingoff the Norman invaders, but as the battles wore on, and through a series of rouses by theNormans, the English troops began to suffer unyielding losses at the hands of the Normanarchers who were using longbows. The English Witan [ruling council] decided to name Harold, thepowerful Earl of Wessex who was a Saxon, as the successor to William. The ranking system is based on the average of the threehighest Royal Round scores submitted to the Archery Scorekeeper within the previoustwelve months. There are twomain stipulations however and these include 1) a strict adherence to safety, and 2) allequipment should adhere to the spirit of mediƦval archery. They are also an excellent constructionproject however, and many archers prefer to design and make there own at very littlecost.Archery in Distant ShoreArchery has been one of the focal points for SCA activities in Distant Shore. This is essentially a rankingsystem that is designed to provide individual archers with a method to compareindividual skill levels. This is the start of the annual Silver Arrow Archery Tournamentat Foxworthy Manor...the prize - the coveted silver arrow! This meansthat we do not use modern compound bows or crossbows, sighting mechanisms, or releases, etc. This should be done in both strung and unstrung condition. If you have any doubts, ask a local archery marshal to check it out for you. Used bows should always be checked carefully before buying...look for warps, checks and breaks in the laminations, previous repairs that may be suspect, andgeneral overall condition. William decided immediately to invade England and takethe crown. You glance quickly downthe line, last year's winner is at the other end, confident that she will walk awaywith the prize once again. You wait patiently for the marshal to declare the range clear and prepare toshoot...the other archers get ready too, fingers lightly touching the string of theirbows in anticipation. You will also have to decide on the type of bow thatyou will like to shoot.

Archery Arrow Shafts by Hexshaft Canadian Wood Arrows
Archers across the globe sought for a way to enhance the natural qualities of wood arrows, and improve the consistency of arrow strength and uniformity. Arrow Straightening is simplified when working with the hexshaft, since the grain gives consistent strength all around. Bowhunters and target shooters around the world prefer the hexshaft for its rugged durability and accuracy. Built with Precision Accuracy for Weapon Superiority. Due to the unique structure of the hexshaft, as arrows cure they do not shrink out of round as standard-grain arrows will. High-tolerance engineering enables the laminating process to produce shaft strength which is higher than that achieved if it were a standard wood-dowel arrowshaft, and each shaft is individually examined to ensure quality control. In making the Hexshaft, lodgepole pine is selected specifically for its strength and straight grain. Nock-Grain orientation is not required, since the edge-grain is uniform throughout the shaft. Once you try shooting a hexshaft, you will agree that the arrow shoots straighter, and that the bow recovers quicker due to the uniform spine strength. The answer to this required a blend of traditional archery knowledge and modern engineering experience. The challenge in making the Hexshaft Arrow Shaft was to develop a wood arrowshaft better than any other arrow in the world. The design of the hexshaft allows the entire surface to have edge-grain, giving superior strength and completely eliminating the feathering effect of flat-grain on regular arrow shafts. The difference Hexshaft Arrows make can also be seen in the arrow-making process. The finish on each and every hexshaft arrow delivered is exceptionally smooth no sanding required! The Hexshaft arrow shaft was designed with these principles in mind. The shaft itself is made from six individually machined triangles, made from the same piece of wood. These Canadian made high-quality arrows are manufactured in British Columbia and can be shipped to your location. This resulted in the strongest and most uniform wooden shafts ever made. Visit our Arrow and Archery Supplies, Arrowsmiths, Archery sites Links page. We are confident that once you use a Hexshaft Arrow Shaft, you will immediately appreciate the ten years of development that has gone into making this shaft available to you now. When applying cresting to a hexshaft, you will notice that the circumference is uniform as the arrow turns, therefore allowing finer and more consistent color lines. Whether you are a traditional archer who enjoy archery for hunting or for target shooting you will find the Hexshaft Arrow shaft to be of the finest quality.

A thicker shaft provides greater stiffness.Internal component carbon arrows are measured by spine deflection. Arrow tables can help you make the right selection.Aluminum arrows are labeled by their outside diameter and the shaft's wall thickness. Arrows that are too lightweight for your bow may cause you to essentially “dry fire” your bow.Spine and “Archer’s Paradox”Every arrow shaft has a degree of stiffness called spine, which means resistance to bending. Bending, known as “archer’s paradox,” occurs when an arrow is released from the bow. Copyright © 1998-2008 Today's Bowhunter and Kalkomey Enterprises,Inc. Drawing an arrow that’s too short is dangerous because it may slip off the bow, while an arrow that’s too long adds unnecessary weight and weakens the spine of the arrow. For example, 3-60/340 means three wraps of carbon fiber, an aluminum core tube diameter of 60, and a spine stiffness rating of 340. For example, if an arrow is labeled 2013, the arrow has a 20/64-inch outside diameter and a 13/1000-inch-thick shaft wall. Good arrow flight can be obtained if 10 to 16 percent of the arrow’s total weight with point attached is in the forward half of the arrow. If your arrows are too lightly or heavily spined for your bow, the “archer’s paradox” movements will be extreme, resulting in poor arrow flight and loss of accuracy. Mismatched arrows may not fly correctly or accurately. Spine strength must be matched to the bow’s draw weight to minimize arrow flexing during flight. The forward thrust of the string causes the shaft to bend in one direction, and then react in the opposite direction as it speeds downrange.Spine strength must be matched to bow draw weight. The smaller the number, the stiffer the spine. Your local archery shop will help you match your gear.Arrow Shaft Length and LabelingArrow shaft length also must be matched to your bow.
But with anti-hunting emotions and lawsuits threatening to forestall sound conservation science, the Rocky Mountain... Don’t get confused though, our content will never be Hollywood. Each one of the packs was run through the proverbial ringer in the backcountry under extreme conditions and circumstances. Eastmans’ in Kentucky talking about hunting Western big game? Fish and Wildlife Service this week hopes to remove wolves from endangered species lists in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. FMP continues their mission to spread the word on the latest trends, techniques, and technologies of the cutting-edge - and sometimes controversial - sport of extreme bow hunting. Founded in 2004, Full Moon Productions is a Salt Lake City-based production company that makes authentic, feature-length extreme hunting movies. I assure you, this test was not done by some “pinhead” in a cubicle in New York City. I love the show and I am pretty sure you will too, check it out by clicking this link. I should have plenty of time on my hands to chat about anything but turkeys and whitetails. If you are in the area, stop by the booth and say hello. Ike’s (my brother) mountain goat episode is ready to watch on-line…pretty cool, if I do say so myself. It proves, Cameron says, that with visualization, commitment and a willingness to work as hard as it takes, anything is possible. It was all put to the test and came to fruition when Cameron participated in this year’s running of the granddaddy of ‘em all – the Boston Marathon. Knowing that the famous endurance athlete and former cycling champion Lance Armstrong was going to be in the race, Cameron set a goal of catching up with and pacing Armstrong. Living by the phrase, “Cry in training, laugh in battle,” Cameron began pushing himself as a runner – knowing that ultimately, it will also make him a better bowhunter. Many of them are blood-stained and crusty from our sweat. Nate has been working on this particular project for the better part of an entire year now, and the results are finally due out in the June/July issue of EHJ. Nate’s “bad to the bone” pack review should be in your mailbox by the 10th of June. Proof follows the success of FMP's other feature films, 360 and The Ride. See you there!- Guy Eastman Die-off decimates bighorn sheep herd04/14/2008 8:24 AMBy Eve Byron - Independent Record - 04/11/08The wild bighorn sheep in the Elkhorn Mountains have suffered an "all-age die-off", with only 19 found alive last week. The first installation of that policy is now available. Then, realizing that running can require and inspire the same level of commitment, sacrifice, pain and reward as backcountry bowhunting, Cameron decided to ratchet his running up to the same level of intensity with which he approaches bowhunting. These packs were used, abused and scrutinized by true backcountry hunters. This show is one of my all time favorites, and the conditions are extreme. Throw in some Eastmans’ and a little village called Louisville, Kentucky and you have the NRA show. Unfortunately, we have since discontinued that DVD but, the guys in the video department were able to scrounge up the judging segment and post it onto the internet so those of your who are gearing up for a mule deer hunt this fall can brush up on your field judging skills. We have been getting requests for an Eastmans' DVD called "Sage Bucks" mostly because there was a good tutorial on how to field judge trophy mule deer on it. We reviewed more than 10 packs from 10 different manufacturers and have come up with some sweet results to help you pick a new backpack for this fall.
